Yeats’s Easter Rising:The Rhetorical Making of a Mask

Christopher Malone

Abstract

Yeats’s theory of masks develops at a crucial moment in Irish history—inthe year after the 1916 rebellion—in which an antithetical vision of the nation beginsto take hold. The Easter Rising presents itself in Per Amica Silentia Lunae ashistorical subtext that obliges Yeats’s inner need for opposition, and hiscorrespondence with Lady Gregory, Maud Gonne, and others at the time of theRising both challenges and fortifies his emerging theory of masks. Per Amica is awork that resorts frequently to occult imagery, conceiving of what Herbert Levinecalls “collective mind” often in mystical terms, as Anima Mundi or Anima Hominis. But in the year leading up to its publication, Yeats’s inner need for opposition isalso manifest rhetorically, in correspondence in which Yeats reaches beyond himself, beyond certain fixed ideas or static preconceptions that he held about events andthose involved. In this sense, collective mind is registered for Yeats, always if notultimately, as a matter of argued perspective.
