Endtimes, Elegies, and Retrospectives: The Role of Time in Yeats’s Final Works

Matthew M. DeForrest
Johnson C. Smith University

Abstract

Yeats attempts, in Last Poems, to come to terms with his own death. Andwhile it is his own death that he faces, we should recall that he did not approachdeath as a perceived end. Instead, he wrote of it in A Vision as the moment when“consciousness passes from Husk to Spirit” as the soul begins its preparations forrebirth. The distinction between conceiving of death as a strange beginning ratherthan oblivion is in part connected with Yeats’s concept of time and of the nature ofexistence, as detailed in A Vision. This approach, which had origins in his earlyconceptualization of time and its relationship to death, is expressed throughout thepoetry of this collection.
