Yeats’s Low Mysticism: A Holistic Approach with Zen Poetic Consciousness

Tae Ho Han
University in Toronto, Canada.

Abstract

Yeats’s poetry doesn’t embrace absolute poverty, nothingness, even pureglory of God, theologically abstruse language. Rather, his is full of intellectual questand learnings. All these poetic temperaments display more occultic than mystictendencies, intellectual rather than-affective, theological rather than theurgical.1) Sohis work can be classified into the western gnostic and hermetic traditions, where hehas transformed and incorporated all the world-wide mystic and occultic knowledge(or mystic abstraction) into his poetry-writing. Yeats is, therefore, a low mystic, thatis, occultic, rather than mystic, in essence.
