Abstract

This essay seeks to examine in W. B. Yeats’s later poetry the elements of ZenBuddhism and Noh, the products of Japanese spiritual thought. Japonism was popular inthe early 20th century in the London literary circle. Ernest Fenellosa and Ezra Poundintroduced Japanese religio-spiritual thoughts and literary genres to England. Yeats wasdeeply influenced by the manifestations of the indigenous religiosity in Japan such asNoh and Zen Buddhism, some elements of which came close to what Yeats was after. His spiritual-literary propensity must have led him to accept and adopt those veryimported spiritual products. It is not that difficult to read in Yeats’s later poetry amixture of western mystical thought and Japanese cultural aspects.
