W. B. Yeats’s “Among School Children”: A Buddhist Reading

Abstract

William Butler Yeats’s poem “Among School Children” is a meditation onlove, essence, and change. This paper attempts to relate the Buddhist theories ofessence and change to the core philosophical premises of the poem itself.Furthermore, through two specific Buddhist texts, Milindapanho by Nàgasena andMūlamādhyamikakārikā by Nagarjuna, the paper illustrates similarities in terms ofimagery and philosophical ideas in the specific stanzas of the poem, highlighting aphilosophical foundation in musings on love and essence as they emerge in thepoem.

초록

예이츠의 “어린 학생들 사이에서”는 사랑, 본질, 그리고 변화에 대한 시이다. 본 논문은 본질과 변화의 이론을 시 자체의 핵심적 전제와 연관시킨다. 그리고,두 불교적 텍스트 나가세나의 밀린다판호와 나가류나의 무람마디야미카마리카를참조하여, 본 논문은 시의 각 해당 연에 나타난 이미져리와 철학적 개념들과의 유사점들을 예시한다. 그렇게 하여, 시에 나타나는 사랑과 본질에 대한 사색의 철학적 바탕을 밝히려 한다.
