William Butler Yeats’s Four Early Ballads

Abstract

In this essay, I read W. B. Yeats’s four ballads, “The Ballad of Father O’Hart,” “The Ballad of Moll Magee,” and “The Ballad of Fox Hunter” written in his early age and published in Crossways in 1889 and “The Ballad of Father Gilligan” in The Rose in 1893. Yeats’s ballads originated from Ireland’s history, culture, folklore, and so on. They were originally written to accompany dances, so they were composed in couplets with refrains in alternate lines. These refrains are sung by the dancers. But ironically these ballads give us grief, lamentation, and mourning rather than delights, since the material for the ballads is ‘death,’ such as, the death of Father O’Hart, Moll Magee’s just-born daughter, and a fox hunter or the people around Father Gilligan.
