The Topography of Yeats’s Poetry

Jong Gil Kim
Korea University

Abstract

The paper will study how the actual settings are treated and what theymean in Yeats’s poetry, and also trace how an arc of his attitude towards the actualin poetry shifts at each stage of his poetic career. Fact and fiction for poetry areclosely compared in poems such as “The Lake Isle of Innisfree,” “The Wild Swansat Coole,” “Coole Park and Ballylee, 1931,” “In Memory of Major Robert Gregory,”“A Prayer for My Daughter,” Meditations in Time of Civil War, “Under BenBulben.” He often creates poetry by bending fact to achieve the supreme imaginationof poetry. The paper is tracing the arc of his shifting attitudes to the actual.
