“[A] Dickens and a Shelley in the one body”: Yeats, Lady Gregory, and The Unicorn from the Stars

Abstract

This essay reconsiders the troubled history of Where There is Nothing(1902), which Yeats disavowed as a “contamination,” and its replacement, TheUnicorn from the Stars (1907), and the trajectory of his dramatic collaborationsbetween 1899 and 1907. In seeking out George Moore and then Lady Gregory ascollaborators, Yeats hoped to produce a compelling union of his own poetic methodswith Moore’s and Gregory’s more realist approaches, thereby combining imaginativesubtleties with the concerns, vitalities and language of everyday life. He formulatedthis aspiration as a bringing together of “a Shelley and a Dickens in the one body.”The drafts of The Unicorn from the Stars reveal something of the process by whichthat aspiration broke down. Yeats appears to have quite deliberately used the play toinvestigate the growing creative tensions between himself and Gregory. Its failureand their disagreements effectively ended Yeats’s efforts to write “peasant plays,” hisyears of close collaboration with Gregory, and his readiness to seek out an actual,rather than self-generated, creative “anti-self” to offset and complicate his owncreative tendencies.

본 논문은 예이츠가 “오점”이라고 칭한 『아무도 없는 곳』(1902년)의 어려운 저술과정, 『별나라에서 온 외뿔달린 백마』(1907년)으로의 개작, 1899년과 1907년사이의 그의 공동저술의 역사 등을 다룬다. 공동저술가로서 조지 무어와 레이디 그레고리의 도움으로, 그들의 보다 사실주의적 접근에 의지하여, 미묘한 상상력과 일상사의 관심, 활력, 언어와 결합함으로써 자신의 시적 방법의 최상의 결합을 하고자 희망했다. 그는 이것을 “한 몸에 디킨즈와 셸리”를 결합하는 형식이라고 여겼다. 『별나라에서 온 외뿔 백마』는 이런 형식에 대한 희망이 좌절되는 과정을 보여준다. 예이츠는의도적으로 자신과 그레고리 사이의 증대되는 창조적 긴장을 모색하는 데 이 작품을사용한 것 같다. 이 작업의 실패와 의견의 차이는 그가 “농부의 극”을 쓰려는 노력을끝내게 되고, 수년간의 그레고리와의 긴밀한 협력도 끝나게 되고, 자신의 창조적 결함을 상쇄할 자신과는 다른 창조적 반자아를 모색할 마음을 잃게 된다.
