Abstract

Greek mythology and culture are well represented in Yeats’s poetry: in asense his poetry with these motifs has made Irish myths and culture one of thegreatest cultures in the world. Yeats puts the characters of Iliad by Homer, as wellas Homer himself, in a symbolic arrangement in his poetry, so they could becomepart of great world literature. He has had difficult time with Maud Gonne, his loveand his muse for poetry; he heightens the image of Maud Gonne with the image ofHelen. He ennobles Irish heroes with the images of Achilles and Hectors. ComparingAnthony Raftery with Homer puts Irish culture in line with Greek. He shows theexcellence of Irish traditions by comparing Lady Gregory’s life and Homer’s. By useof Homeric images Yeats in his work succeeds in stressing the importance of thereal world than that of an ideal world. He urges us to recognize that it is thismoment and this life that really count.
