W. B. Yeats: A Comparative Study of His Gnostic Knowledge and His Poetics of Knowing in His Poetry

Abstract

Knowledge and belief are different: belief is passive, whereas knowing ispositive. Gnosticism is characterized by knowing. Man is the one who pursues Truth,as depicted in the image of the union of the dancer and the dance in “AmongSchool Children.” The Bible and Gnosticism are different; the Bible “has inspiredmuch art, yet at the same time Christian orthodoxy, with its insistence on theliteralness and factuality of its sacred literature, has also hindered the conjunction ofreligious and artistic creativity” (Hoeller). Yeats’s pursuit of Gnostic knowledge is illustrated as key images in his poems, including “Sailing to Byzantium.” However,there is a difference between Yeats’s pursuit and Gnosticism. Gnosticism emphasizesthe conflict between body and spirit, seeking freedom from body, whereas Yeatsaims at the union of body and spirit, by looking for something that unites thebinary division of body and soul.

W. B. Yeats 그리고 그의 시에 나타난 영지주의의 시학과 앎의 시학에 대한 비교연구

초록

“앎”과 “믿음”은 다르다. “믿음”이 수동적이라면, “앎”은 능동적인 속성을 내포하고 있다. 영지주의는 후자의 특징을 보이며, 이것은 인간으로 하여금 주체가 되어 능동적으로 궁극적인 진리를 추구하는 길을 열어준다. 어린 학생들 사이에(“Among School Children”)서의 춤과 춤꾼의 합일은, 그 과정이 능동적인 추구의 절정인 것을 보여준다. 성서와 영지주의는 차이점을 보인다. 기독교의 성서 속에는 수많은 예술 창작을 위한 영감을 제공하지만, 문자주의, 사실주의 교리주의라는 제한성이 동시에 존재한다. Yeats는 이런 점을 간파하여, 영지주의자들의 작품 속에서 상징주의, 알레고리, 은유, 신화, 창조적인 다의성을 자양분으로 삼는다. 영지주의의 궁극적인 진리에 이르는 핵심적 추구의 수단이 되는 앎(knowing)의 지성(intellect)에 대한 관점은, 「비잔티움 항해」(“Sailing to yzantium”)을 포함하여, Yeats의 시, 곳곳에 중요한 요소로 등장한다. 그러나, 영지주의와 Yeats의 이원론은 차이점이 발생한다. 영지주의에 서 정신과 물질로 나누는 이원론은 대립적 관계로 배타적이며 정신이 물질적 차원을 벗어나는 것에 역점을 둔다면, Yeats의 이원론은 대립적 갈등과 투쟁적인 요소 속에는 보완과 조화의 관계성을 추구한다는 것이다. Yeats의 이원론과 영지주의 이원론은 이런 점에서 차이점이 발생한다.
