Abstract

In Yeats’s “Sailing to Byzantium” there is Biblical echo. The speaker inthe poem sails to Byzantium where body and soul are in a perfect condition. TheBible stresses the generative power of body to reach the perfection of human soul.Yeats seeks a new form of soul while he desires to connect with a physical realm. The new form is analogous to the resurrection of body after death in the Bible.Yeats uses in the poem both the image of fire for human purification and the imageof clothes, as in the Bible.
