Yeats/Ireland, Faulkner/Mississippi:A Comparative Reading of Yeatsian and Faulknerian Cultural In-betweenness*1)
Hanyang University
Abstract
This article proffers a comparative reading of W. B. Yeats and WilliamFaulkner through the lens of cultural in-betweenness. In accordance with theambiguities cutting back and forth between colonizer and colonized, and betweenindigenizing and Anglicizing of language, Yeats’s strained relationship with theProtestant Anglo-Irish and the Catholic Irish is deeply embedded within the Yeatsiansense of uncertainty and dual allegiances. On the other side, Faulkner’s oeuvrecaptures the ways in which the nation/south imaginative construct and the projectionof residual coloniality onto the sign of the South disrupt the conceptual boundariesof center and periphery, colonizing and colonized, and essentialist and hybrid, thereby providing a glimpse of multiple definition of the US south. By taking adetour of a comparative reading as such, this article examines how Yeats andFaulkner redefine the notions of Irishness and southernness by putting their owncultural in-betweenness to the creative use.
