Yeats and Coleridge: The Poetics of Tragedy

Sinnu Jeong
University of Seoul

Abstract

Yeats read Coleridge after 1925 and could balance his work with theabstraction of the philosopher. This paper, by comparing their poems, studies howColeridge and Yeats in their situations accept tragedies and sublimate them in theirpoems. Yeats thinks that man could understand life only when he understandstragedy: thus, one of the main elements in his poetry is tragedy. Both Yeats andColeridge make attempts in their poems to turn tragic moments and situations intojoy. The two poets wrote two great poems: Coleridge, “Dejection: An Ode” andYeats, “Lapis Lazuli.” On reading these two poems, I find them strikingly similar inthe subject matter and moods as well. On the subject of children, the paperdiscusses Yeats and Coleridge, by looking at their own child in their poems. Intragic situations, each poet could see human weakness but imagine the future withhopes, as exemplified by Coleridge’s “Frost at Midnight” and Yeats’s “A Prayer forMy Daughter.”
