The Ajanta Mountain Caves’ Hindu/Buddhist Tantric Dancers and W.B. Yeats’s Later Eastern-focused Concept of Unity of Being

Abstract

Yeats studied the Ajanta Caves art in the context of his parallel explorationsinto aspects of Hindu and Buddhist religion and philosophy, which is crucial tounderstand his later perception of the eastern dancer symbolism and his non-asceticand non-dualistic perception of the mural symbolism of the Ajanta Caves meditativeart. This study helps understand in a new way Yeats’s eastern-focused concept ofUnity of Being which the dancer embodies, as explored in A Vision Papers and PerAmica Silentia Luna (1916), and even more explicitly, in his revised edition of AVision (1937). The Ajanta Caves dancer resides before the “gate of abdication,”inviting any admirer of this art to meditate upon and experience an eastern-focused,but also universal, concept of Unity of Being, which has by the mid ’20s become forYeats a “Zen” act of “contemplation” where all “becomes through rhythm one singleact of the mind,” making the eastern dancer its most exemplary expression.
