Abstract

Walter Pater wrote the Mona Lisa, which is contained in The Renaissance:Studies in Art and Poetry in 1869, which influenced the formation of Modernismand British Modern poetry, not to mention some of Yeats’s poems. Pater’s thoughtreflected in the famous paragraph found its echoes in Yeats’s later poems, especially“The Gyres” and “Lapis Lazuli.” Pater’s Mona Lisa shows that history is changingas is the case with the lineaments of the Renaissance lady. Yeats’s two poems notonly borrowed some expressions from the Mona Lisa, but also repeated Pater’sbelief. So the two poems suggest a similar idea: do not be sad when you have hardtimes because good times will soon come.
