Yeats and Nietzsche: Affirmation of the Apollonian and the Dionysian

Ilhwan Yoon

Abstract

Yeats’s later work is more accurately understood in the light of Nietzsche’sApollonian/Dionysian duality. The creation of an individual life by the Apolloniansemblance is expressed in Yeats forcefully through the idea of the mask. TheApollonian needs the Dionysian power that shatters the individual semblance in orderto recreate it ever anew. The Apollonian and Dionysian tragic idea permeates Yeats’sattitude toward tragic life and art especially in his “tragic joy.”
