A Study on the Dramaturgy in W. B. Yeats's The Hour-Glass*

Abstract

In this paper the process of the revisions of Yeats’s The Hour-Glass istraced to examine the development of Yeats’s dramaturgy. Of the many changes, twomost important changes are discussed: turning parts of the play into verse andremoval of the Wise Man’s kneeling before the Fool. The revisions show asignificant growth in Yeats’s stagecraft, and as a result the play has a universalappeal.

예이츠의 『모래 시계』에 나타난 극작술 연구

초록

예이츠의 초기 희곡 『모래 시계』의 수정 과정을 추적하여 그의 극작술의 발전을 연구한다. 특히 현자가 바보 앞에 무릎을 꿇고 구원을 간청하는 장면을 현자의 깨달음과 죽음의 수용으로 바꿈으로써 주제 전개의 걸림돌을 제거했고, 원래 산문극에 현자와 천사의 대사 등을 운문으로 바꿈으로써 주제를 강조했다.
