Dohyun Rim
Assistant Professor in Daejin University

Abstract

This essay explores the last scene of Yeats’s play The Words upon theWindow-Pane (1934), focusing on its theatrical and symbolic significances. The finalscene where Swift’s last cry comes out of the medium’s mouth offers a thrillingmoment to the audience who believe the play is about to finish, and it drives theaudience to have a glimpse into Swift’s tragedy. Moreover, the scene produces thesymbolic meaning of the opposition between subjectivity and objectivity through thecontrast between man and woman, and it delivers the playwright’s subversiveintention against the Catholic ethics and politics of his contemporaries.
