“The Tower”: Enlightenment that Transcends Life and Death

Wonkyung Shin
Assistant Professor at Yongin University

Abstract

The Norman tower where Yeats lived provided him with a great symbol inhis poetry, and his poem “The Tower” represents the whole corpus of the poems inthe volume, The Tower. This paper aims to read and analyse “The Tower” minutely,to show that it is the crystalization of Yeats’s poetics and philosophy. It also studieswhat the tower means to the poet and what he realizes from it. Unlike the speakersin “Among School Children” or “Sailing to Byzantium,” the speaker in “The Tower”neither escapes from reality nor reaches a momentary realization of reality. Seeingthis world as a “Translunar Paradise” where man is born, lives, dies, and is bornagain in an eternal cycle. Yeats finally reaches an enlightenment and transcends lifeand death: a new realization.
