Abstract

Though William Butler Yeats didn’t participate in the war, he lived in themilieu of war. Yeats lived through the First World War, the Anglo-Irish War, andthe Irish Civil War. But he rarely expressed his thoughts concerning the wars or theeffect of the wars, except in a few elegies on Robert Gregory. According to hiswell-known theory of the Gyre, the civilization of mankind repeats its cycle ofdevelopment and decay every two thousand years. He thought war is just a herald ofthe dissolution of a civilization and the beginning of a new civilization.
