The Affectus of Sorrow and Shame: An Affective Network in Conor McPherson’s The Weir and Shining City
Abstract
The aim of this essay is to explore Shining City and The Weir as the micronarrative reflection and intervention in the transition of Irish identity. This paper defines McPherson as a writer tracking changes in Ireland and analyzes the meaning of monologues and ghost stories shown in the two works as the process of identity formation, and the various aspects of communication between characters from the perspective of the affectus network. The speakers in the work play a role in creating identity through a collaborative process of talking to the audience. This article suggests that these characters are affectus alienation and their actions are made to experience the political transition of affectus that triggers some unfamiliar and uncomfortable response to us through verbal involvement.
슬픔과 수치심의 감응: 코너 맥퍼슨의 『더 위어』와 『샤이닝 시티』에 나타난 감응 네트워크
초록
이 글은 아일랜드 정체성의 변화에 대한 코너 맥퍼슨의 성찰을 『더 위어』와 『샤이닝 시티』를 통해 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 논문은 맥퍼슨을 아일랜드 변화를 추적하고 있는 작가로서 규정하고 두 작품에 나타난 독백과 유령 스토리의 의미를 정체성 형성의 과정으로 읽는다. 그리고 인물들의 다양한 소통 양상들을 감응 네트워크 관점에서 분석한다. 작품 속 화자들은 청중들에게 이야기 하는 협력적인 과정을 통해 정체성을 창조하는 역할을 수행하고 있다. 이 글은 이러한 인물들을 감응 소외자로 그리고 이들의 행위를 언어적 관여를 통해 우리들에게 어떤 낯설고 불편한 감응을 촉발하는 감응의 정치적 이행을 경험하게 하는 것임을 이야기한다.
