Memory, Love, and Self-Reflection in Seamus Heaney’s Animal Poems

Abstract

The natural world that includes animals in Seamus Heaney’s poems is sometimes violent and far more complex and multifaceted than we understand. Heaney realizes the pursuit of balance and harmony with unforgettable traces in the past cruel history. Heaney’s frequent classical meter and rhythm can be seen as a balance between form and content. The poet considers the image of a badger that is misunderstood, and by looking at the appearance of a flattering badger the poet accepts it depending on the reality that we face. He also unfolds his wife’s physical body, water-controlling power, and his delightful journey with colorful, neat verbs and adjectives from the otter. Seeing the skunk’s tail at night, he remembers his love with his wife in an honest and calm manner, away from the smell that most people recall, and replaces it with the smell of foreign earth and air, and the smell of the pillow of wife.
