Aspects of Nationalism in Yeats and Tagore around the 20th Century
Abstract
Tagore and Yeats, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature, represent two different cultures, countries, and traditions, and engage in literary activities under British colonial rule. The purpose of this study is to examine how Yeats and Tagore express nationalism through their works in the British colonization around the 20th Century. Yeats and Tagore were against extreme nationalism at the time and advocated the nationalism they thought of. Tagore always stands for his own people but he has no hostility towards people who belong to any other country, religion, and other tradition. Tagore is sure about the process that nationalism without cosmopolitan humanity will cause harm to the history of mankind. Yeats is concerned about the degeneration of the tradition of his land and culture. Both Tagore and Yeats deal with the nationalism from the perspective of human history.
초록
노벨문학상을 수상한 예이츠와 타고르는 두 개의 다른 문화, 국가, 전통 을 대표하고 있으며 영국의 식민통치하에서 문학 활동을 하였다. 본 연구의 목적은 20 세기 전후 영국 식민지 상황에서 예이츠와 타고르가 자신들의 작품을 통해 민족주의 를 어떻게 표현하고 있는지 고찰하는 데 있다. 예이츠와 타고르는 당시 극단적 민족주의에 대해 거부감을 가지고 자신들이 생각하는 민족주의를 표방한다. 항상 자기 민족을 대변하지만 타고르는 다른 나라의 문화와 종교 그리고 민족에 대한 적대감을 드러내지 않는다. 타고르는 인종적 경향을 강조하는 민족 주의 과정에서 인류애가 결여된 민족주의가 나타난다고 확신한다. 반면 예이츠는 자신 의 조국 아일랜드의 전통과 문화의 변질에 대해 우려한다. 타고르와 예이츠 모두 인류 역사의 비전에서 민족주의를 다룬다.
