Abstract

This research delves into the environmental ethics present in selected poems by Mario Petrucci, a recipient of the Bridport Poetry Prize. The thematic analysis will center on the notion of ‘Ethics’, a key element of ecocriticism that examines the relationship between humans and nature. To explore the diverse aspects of eco-philosophy within the realm of poetry, the work of Mario Petrucci is given significant recognition. The concept of land ethics, introduced by Aldo Leopold, which is the primary component of eco-philosophy, will be analyzed to gain fresh perspectives on Petrucci’s ethical views regarding the natural world. The discussion will highlight poems that embody ethical considerations and underscore the importance of humility in fostering our responsibility towards the wilderness, while also illuminating Petrucci’s connection with nature. The poems “Sapling”, “Woodcuts” and “Snapshot” from Petrucci’s Bosco “Fence”, “Ukritye”, “Pirpyat”, “Nana”, “Baba Nadya” “Can you eat apples from Chernobyl” and “Goluboy” from HeavyWater a poem for Chernobyl have been thoughtfully chosen for this study.
