From Roots to Routes: W. B. Yeats and World Literature*

Abstract

What challenges does the shift toward world literature pose to thetraditional disciplinary boundaries in and outside national literatures? Does such ashift signal a fruitful critical repositioning of its unspoken potentials, or does itironically indicate remarginalization or displacement of the traditional discipline’songoing concerns? And then, how does a move toward world literature alter thecognitive and disciplinary maps in which Yeats studies has been produced andpositioned? With these questions in mind, this article first examines an array of linesof thought that converge on and diverge from the idea of world literature.Subsequently, I suggest a double trajectory for reconsidering Yeats through the lensof world literature: redefining the Irish and European frames by explicating howmutually constitutive they are; reading Yeats through and against his non-Westernpredecessors, contemporaries, and successors.

초록

이 논문은 세계문학의 관점에서 예이츠 문학을 바라볼 수 있는 가능성을 진단한다. 세계문학에 대한 논의가 가져온 새로운 이론적 가능성과 한계를 검토하고 이를 통해 세계문학의 지도에서 예이츠 문학의 좌표가 어떻게 새겨질 수 있는지살펴본다. 결론적으로 이 논문은 예이츠 문학의 세계문학적 가능성을 아일랜드적인 것과 유럽적인 것의 상호보완적 성격 규명, 그리고 유럽 프레임을 넘어선 상호교차적인문학적 영향의 흔적을 인식해 내는 것에서 찾는다.
