Daniel Albright’s Panaesthetics: A Breakthrough for Comparative Studies in Literature, Painting, Music

Young Suck Rhee is Professor of Poetry and Creative Writing at Hanyang University, Seoul; Editor of The Yeats Journal of Korea. His interests include Literature and Painting, Lyric Poetry, Renaissance and Modernist Poetry, Creative Writing of Poetry. He has recently translated W. B. Yeats’s A Vision. He has published more than 100 articles and essays on W. B. Yeats and Modernist poets.

Abstract

Daniel Albright has studied and taught literature for a long time. He has written so much, all of the books he has written being original and becoming standards for many students and scholars. His main concern in recent years:“If I want the artwork [and the literary work] to be absolute, a text severed from all context, it diffuses into a swarm of mosquitoes; if I want the artwork to be a specimen and manifestation of its surrounding culture, it becomes an armadillo curling itself into a scaly ball” (223). Now it is time that we should turn our eye away from the text to the things around us. Despite this, Albright delves deep into the text itself, also.

이영석은 한양대 영시 및 창작 시 교수이고 『한국예이츠저널』의 편집장이다. 그의 관심분야는 문학과 그림; 서정시; 르네상스 시와 현대시; 시와 창작, 등이다. 최근 W. B. 예이츠의 『환상록』(A Vision)을 번역하였다. W. B. 예이츠와 모더니스트 시인들에 대한 100여편의 논문을 발표했다.

초록

다니엘 올브라트는 문학을 연구하고 가르친 시간이 아주 길다. 그는 많은 글을 썼고, 그가 쓴 모든 책들은 독창적이고, 많은 후학과 학자들의 귀감이 되고 있다. 그의 최근의 관심을 이렇게 표현 한다: “예술작품이 절대적이라 여겨지고 그 텍스트가 모든 맥락과 절단되면, 그것은 한 무더기의 모기떼로 흩어지게 될 것이다. 예술작품이 그 작품의 고유의 문화의 대표적 표현으로 여기지면, 그 작품은 갑옷을 입은, 공처럼 둥글게 변하는 아마딜로가 될 것이다” (233). 이제 우리는 텍스트에서 눈을 떼서 우리 주변의 것들에 돌려야 할 때이다. 이런 말에도 불구하고, 올브라트는 텍스트 자체도 깊이 파고들었다.
