“The Grey Rock” Revisited: An Ironic Relationship between Men and Gods
Abstract
One of dominant concerns in early Yeats’s poems includes his stronginterest in a relationship between natural world and supernatural world. As Yeats grewup, however, the poet began to show his skepticism in the supernatural forces, whichis implied through “The Grey Rock,” the opening poem of Responsibilities. In thispoem, the poet emphasizes his allegiance to his poetic Muse, but he expresses hisantipathy towards gods to which the muse belongs. He reveals his ambivalent attitudestowards the mystical forces beyond this world. Yeats’s evolving attitudes towardssupernatural beings can be detected in many poems collected in Responsibilities whichdeal with more social issues than the earlier books of poems. But the irony of thebeginning poem is that the poet seems to depend upon the world of gods about whichhe expresses his doubt.
「회색바위」 다시 읽기: 인간과 신의 관계의 아이러니
초록
초기 예이츠 시의 특징 중의 하나는 자연세계와 초자연 세계와의 관계를심도 있게 다루고 있다는 것이다. 그러나 우리는 예이츠가 성장하면서 초자연세계의 탐닉으로부터 점차 벗어나고자 하는 시인의 모습을 보게 된다. 『책임』의 서시 회색바위를 통해서 예이츠가 이전에 갖고 있던 초자연 세계에 대한 동경의 자세가 부정적인 측면이 가미된 애증의 자세로 바뀌게 된다. 이 시에서 시인은 한편으로는 초자연 세력인뮤즈에게 신념을 받치고 있노라고 강조하지만 그 뮤즈가 속한 신의 집단에게는 전과는다르게 부정적으로 묘사한다. 세상너머 세력 즉 신비의 세계에 대해 애증을 함께 갖는이중적인 태도를 지니고 있다는 것이다. 신에 대한 달라진 태도는 사실 이 시가 실린시집 『책임』의 전체적인 내용에서도 확인이 되는데 신비의 세계를 많이 다루었던 이전시집들과는 다르게 여기에서는 대부분 사회적인 이슈들을 더 많이 다루고 있다는 점이다. 그러나 이 서시의 아이러니는 자신이 의심의 눈초리를 보내고 있는 바로 그 신의세계에 의지하고 있는 시인의 모습이다.
