The Countess Cathleen and Cathleen Ni Houlian: Yeats’s Rejection of Materialism and Sacrificial Politics

Abstract

In Countess Cathleen and Cathleen ni Houlihan, Yeats expresses his beliefsin the political and social changes in Ireland and the public. In Countess Cathleen,he believes that the materialist ideology of the middle class of Ireland at that timeunder capitalism is the cause of farmers’ corruption. To restore culture, farmersshould restore the traditional worship of nobility and suppress the middle class. InCathleen ni Houlihan, honoring the loyalty and sacrifice, Yeats claims that weshould devote our entire lives to nationalism, although he does not overlook thedanger of doing that.
