The Absolute Good: Ezra Pound’s “Hell Cantos” and Dante Alighieri’s “Inferno” in the Divine Comedy
Abstract
Ezra Pound and Dante Alighieri are poets who emphasize the pursuit of the Absolute Good by using symbols such as a hell. Pound depicts London as the modern hell and denounces both the corruption of modern civilization and the immoral life of our contemporaries; On the other hand, Dante makes a hell based on the Holy Bible, explaining the hell of afterlife. Pound starts and finishes the journey of a hell with a guidance of Plotinus, but Dante goes on a trip to a variety of hells with a guidance of Virgil. Therefore, a hell being a state of mind of human beings, two poets emphasize that it is important for the contemporaries to practice the Absolute Good to escape from the hell.
절대선: 파운드의 시 “지옥편”과 단테의 『신곡』“지옥편”
초록
파운드와 단테는 시, 지옥편을 상징적 매체로 사용하여 인간 세상에서 절대선의 추구를 강조하고 있다. 파운드는 런던의 현대사회를 지옥으로 묘사하여 현대 문명의 타락과 현대인들의 비도덕적 삶을 질타한다. 반면에 단테는 성경에 토대를 두고 지옥을 설정하여 사후세계의 지옥을 설명한다. 파운드는 플로티노스의 안내로 지옥 여정을 시작하고 끝내지만, 단테는 베르길리우스의 안내로 다양한 지옥을 여행한다. 요 컨대 두 시인은 지옥을 인간의 심리적 상태로 묘사하여 거기서 벗어나기 위하여 절대선을 실천하는 것이 현대인들이 가야할 여정임을 강조하고 있다.
