W. B. Yeats’s Astrology in The Cat and the Moon

Abstract

William Butler Yeats was interested in astrology in his life, making its structures and critical factors set up his system of thought. The Cat and the Moon exposes the astrological elements in the behavior of both Blind Beggar and Lame Beggar. Blind Beggar is a dark part of the crescent moon, Lame Beggar a bright part of the crescent moon. Blind Beggar with Lame Beggar on his back symbolizes a crescent moon. Also, the moon changed in a cat’s pupils represents the astrological factors: its energy influences a cat’s life. Like this, Yeats sings us the phases of the moon in the play, which have an effect on the conflict and harmony between self and anti-self, body and soul as well as human fate and human personality.

초록

예이츠는 평생 동안 점성술에 관심을 가졌으며, 그 점성술의 구조와 핵심 으로 그의 사상체계를 정립한다. 『고양이와 달』은 이 작품의 주인공들, 맹인 거지와 절 름발이 거지의 행동에서 점성술적 요소를 드러낸다. 맹인 거지는 초승달의 어두운 부분 을, 절름발이 거지는 초승달의 밝은 부분을 의미한다. 맹인 거지가 절름발이 거지를 등 에 업은 것은 한 개의 초승달을 상징한다. 또한 고양이 미나로우쉬의 두 눈동자에서 변 화되고 있는 달은 달의 힘이 고양이의 삶에 미치고 있는 점성술적 요소를 재현한다. 이 처럼 예이츠는 이 극작품에서 달의 상들이 인간의 운명과 성격뿐만 아니라 자아와 반자 아, 육체와 영혼 사이의 갈등과 조화에 영향을 미치고 있는 점성술을 노래하고 있다.
