Tragic Ecstasy and the Sublime in W. B. Yeats’s Poems
Abstract
W. B. Yeats was deeply concerned with the concept of antinomies and oppositions in human history, which was to further develop to become the concept of his tragic ecstasy as fully realized in his later work. One of his primary concerns in his poems is to express the tragic ecstasy. It may be linked with Edmund Burke’s concept of delightful horror, or the idea of the sublime. I would like to apply Burke’s ideas of the sublime in Yeats’s five poems, and compare them to see the affinities between Yeats and Burke.
예이츠 시에 재현된 ‘비극적 황홀’과 ‘숭고’
초록
삶과 역사의 현장에 편재한 모순대립은 예이츠의 마음속에 비극적 서정 성을 잉태하는 씨앗으로 작동했다. 비극적 서정성은 그가 철학적 사색을 거치면서 ‘비 극적 황홀’로 귀결되어 재현되었다. 이를 시에 재현하는 것은 그의 큰 관심사였다. 그 가 강조한 ‘비극적 황홀’은 에드먼드 버크가 주장한 ‘안도감이 수반된 두려움’과 같은 맥락으로 숭고의 다른 이름이다. 본 논문의 목적은 버크의 숭고의 관념을 예이츠의 다 섯 시편에 적용하여 예이츠 시에 재현된 ‘비극적 황홀’의 의미를 확인하면서, 숭고를 논증하는 것이다.
