Completeness as Incomplete, Incompleteness as Complete: a Merleau-Pontian Reading of Yeats’s “Among School Children”
Abstract
This article aims at rereading “Among School Children,” particularly with a focus on the last line of the poem, through the lens of Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s notion of “phenomenological perception.” While Yeats reacted variously and in contradictory fashion to events in his life and the life of his country, he continued to advocate openness to experience and to be extraordinarily intent upon improvement. If no single path through such a labyrinthine imagination as his can be mapped with any degree of certainty, Merleau-Pontian embodied perception can serve as a key with which to unlock the door to the mystery of the Yeatsian world.
미완성으로서의 완성, 완성으로서의 미완성: 메를로-퐁티를 통한 초등학생들 사이에서 읽기
초록
이 논문의 목적은 예이츠의 초등학생들 사이에서 Among School Children , 특히 이 시의 마지막 행 “어떻게 우리가 춤과 춤꾼을 구별할 수 있겠는가”를 메를로-퐁티의 현상학적 지각의 개념을 통해 접근함으로써 또 다른 읽기의 가능성을 탐 색하는 것이다. 메를로-퐁티가 내세우는 지각은 절대적 내재성이나 외재성으로 작동하기 보다 세계에 대한 ‘신체적 현존’으로 이해된다. 명징하고 통일된 주관과 지각 대상의 구 분을 거부하는 신체적 현존을 통한 경험은 세계와 대상을 끊임없이 ‘태동하는 상태’에 있는 것으로 파악한다. 예이츠 시의 핵심을 지속적인 자기갱신과 변화로 정의하면서, 변 화에 대한 개방성을 특징으로 하는 예이츠 시가 어떻게 메를로 퐁티의 현상학적 지각 개 념을 통해 잘 포착될 수 있는지 살펴본다.
