Manifesting Lights and Shadows: Indian and Japanese Aesthetics in the Poetry of W.B. Yeats and T.S. Eliot
Abstract
Indian and Japanese aesthetics manifest similar aesthetic universality in artistic adequacy; only the ways of representations differ. The artistic purpose is virtuous, to move ahead from darkness towards light. The aesthetic appreciation of art focuses on eastern textual bliss where Indian aesthetics manifest the intuitive light of Brahman, while Japanese aesthetics celebrate mystic shadows of Śūnyatā. In understanding eastern subjectivity in the form of absolute consciousness, Brahman is absolute unity, while Śūnyatā is neither nihilistic nor an absurd idea, which it is often misunderstood as. Its realization creates unity, continuity, harmony, and mindfulness in the perception of art. The eastern perspective is bounded by a transcendental consciousness in form and formlessness, which celebrates the beauty and is meditative in perception. In this research paper, reading T.S. Eliot and W.B. Yeats poetry, one understands how their art reflects eastern philosophical significations creatively, manifesting the aesthetics of light and shadows and how their poetry attains Nirvãna in its transcendental and worldly attributes.
초록
도와 일본의 미학은 예술적 적합성에서 유사한 미적 보편성을 나타내며 표현 방식이 다를 뿐이다. 인도와 일본 미학의 예술적 목적은 덕목, 즉 어둠에서 빛으로 나아가는 것이다. 예술의 미적 감상은 인도의 미학이 브라만의 직관적인 빛을 드러내는 동양의 텍스트적 행복에 초점을 맞춘다면, 일본의 미학은 공의 신비한 그림자를 찬미한다. 절대의식의 형태로 동양적 주체성을 이해하는 방식에 있어서, 브라만은 절대적인 통일성을 추구하는 반면, 공은 허무주의적이지 않으며 종종 오해되는 불합리한 생각도 아니다. 그것의 실현은 예술에 대한 인식에서 통일성, 연속성, 조화 및 마음 챙김을 발생한다. 동양적 관점은 형태와 무형태의 초월적 의식에 의해 한계를 지니는데, 이것은 아름다움을 찬미하고 지각하는 가운데 명상한다. 이 논문은 T.S. 엘리엇과 W.B. 예이츠의 시를 통해 그들의 예술이 어떻게 빛과 그림자의 미학을 드러내며 동양의 철학적 의미를 창의적으로 반영하는지, 그리고 그들의 시가 어떻게 초월적이고 세속적인 속성으로 열반에 도달하는지 탐구한다.
