Abstract

This paper seeks to read John Millington Synge’s The Playboy of the Western World through the critical concepts of Mikhail Bakhtin. The paper suggests that Singh can be seen as a ‘Rablaisian’ writer, using Bakhtin’s language, in that his use of extreme forms of parody, his preference for humor and laughter can be seen throughout his work. The paper will show that links exist between Singh’s plays and Bakhtin’s theories on dialogoism and carnivalesque, and that this allows for a deeper understanding of the social and linguistic dynamics at work in Singh’s work. In conclusion, the paper argues that the subversive nature of laughter in the work and the change in Christie’s status, while depicting the conflict and confrontation of different worlds, can actually be seen as a process of integration.
