The Dualistic Opposition and Harmony in William Blake’s The Four Zoas

Abstract

William Blake, in The Four Zoas, suggests that the Four Zoas and their emanations, after causing dualistic conflicts and oppositions, ultimately achieve harmony and re-creation. The Four Zoas and their emanations dynamically show various conflicts and oppositions: the division and suffering within the human psyche, sexual conflict between male and female, the clash between reason and emotion, the opposition of rational order and creative power, the struggle between life and death, the tension between imagination and order, and the conflict between revolution, destruction, and order. Eventually, they attempt to achieve harmony and re-creation in the Last Judgment, building a new human world. In The Four Zoas, Blake’s imagination leaves a lasting impression on modern readers, emphasizing the importance of imagination and presenting a vision for a new world.

윌리엄 블레이크의 􋺷네 생물􋺸에서 이원론적 대립과 조화

초록

윌리엄 블레이크는 􋺷네 생물􋺸에서 네 생물과 방사물이 이원론적 대립과 갈등을 일으킨 후에 조화와 재창조를 성취하는 길을 제시한다. 네 생물과 방사물은 인 간 내면의 분열과 고통, 남성과 여성의 성적 갈등, 이성과 감정의 갈등, 이성적 질서와 창조적 힘의 대립, 생명과 죽음의 갈등, 상상력과 질서의 대립, 혁명과 파괴와 질서 사 이의 대립 등을 역동적으로 보여준다. 그 후에 이들은 최후의 심판에서 조화와 재창조 를 시도하여 새로운 인간세계를 구축한다. 􋺷네 생물􋺸에서 이러한 블레이크의 상상력은 현대인들에게 상상력의 중요성을 각인시키고, 새로운 세계에 대한 비전을 제시한다.
