Yeats’s Eugenical and Psychical Aesthetics

Abstract

It should never be forgotten that Yeats is perfectly capable of contradictinghimself even about some of his most cherished speculations. Nevertheless, thetheoretical aspect of his later work exhibits a marked internal coherence: it is notpossible to separate his ideas about society, his theories about the spirit world, hisdoctrine of the image, his cyclical theory of history. It is for this reason that I havereferred, in brief, to “Eugenical and Psychical Aesthetics.”

예이츠의 우생학적, 영적 미학

저자: 에드워드 래리시는 벨파스트 퀸즈 대학교 영어학대학 학장이다. 그의 많은 저술중에는 『낭만주의 시대의 문학에 나타난 눈 멈과 눈먼 사람들』(에딘버러 대학, 2007), 『블레이트와 현대문학』(폴그레브, 2006), 『W. B. 예이츠: 대표작』(옥스포드대학교, 2001) 등이 포함된다.

초록

우리가 간과하지 말아야 할 사실은, 예이츠는 자신이 가장 소중히 여기는 생각들조차도 스스로 일부 반박할 수 있다는 것이다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 그의 후기 작품들의 이론적 측면은 두드러지게 내적 통일성을 보이다. 즉, 사회와 개념, 이론들과 정신세계, 이미지론, 순환적 역사관, 등 사이의 구분이 쉽지는 않다. 이런 이유로, 나는 간단히 “예이츠의 우생학적, 영적 미학”이라는 주제를 다루고자 한다.
